Political Awareness Committee of MQM USA met with Houston-Karachi Sister City Association Communication & Media Cell; Houston, 1st July 2012: The newly announced Political Awareness Committee (PAC) of MQMUSA was ushered to work immediately after its reorganization. The team met the members of Houston-Karachi Sister City Association for a Luncheon at a local restaurant in Houston. Patron MQM North America Ibad Rehman along with several members of PAC team joined President Muhammad Sheikh and his team. Visiting MPA Abdul Moeed Siddiqui was presented with a shield by the members of HKSCA. Extending support for HKSCA Ibad Rehman assured that being from Karachi a mutual interest exists to promote and develops intercultural understanding. He also highlighted a need to promote international trade and commerce, economic development and tourism. HKSCA officials welcomed the assistance offered from the leadership of MQM USA to strengthen the ties between the two cities. The Houston community first discussed the establishment of a sister city relationship between Houston and Karachi during the early 2000s. Community members began the process by independently facilitating efforts to increase the cultural and trade ties between the two cities, including business collaborations and the exchange of trade delegations. Many Houston-based companies established or expanded offices in Karachi, while the Pakistani presence in Houston continued to grow significantly throughout this time. In May 2008, the Mayor of Karachi, Mustafa Kamal, visited Houston. During his visit, Mayor Kamal discussed the idea of formalizing the sister city relationship with Houston Mayor Bill White. This meeting also resulted in the signing of a Partner in Trade Agreement between Houston and Karachi. Houston City Council Member M.J. Khan then held a community meeting to encourage citizen participation and to present a formal proposal to the City of Houston to finalize the Sister City relationship between the two cities. Their goal was accomplished in early 2009, making Karachi Houston’s seventeenth, and newest, sister city. The Houston-Karachi Sister City Association hopes to further increase bilateral trade, as well as social and cultural ties, between Houston and Karachi. The sister cities concept was launched in 1956 when President Dwight D. Eisenhower proposed linking American cities with cities in other countries to exchange people, ideas and cultures. President Eisenhower’s goal was to involve individuals at all levels of U.S. society in personal diplomacy in the hope that these people-to-people relations would lessen the chance of future world conflicts. Those present to represent MQMUSA team were: Kamal Zafar, Wasim Zaidi, Mohammed Gul, Mohammed Zaheer, Shabbir Ahmed Qaim Khani and Samin Faruqi. For more information:
